Our next vendor announcement is @animal_adventure_pods
Animal Adventure Pods are a small business based in Manchester focusing on creating safe, exciting and appropriate enrichment products predominantly for rabbits. Their hide designs are truly unique and fun and they have even thought of the giant rabbits amongst us, with products for rabbits of every size.
We're so excited to see them at the festival!
The last welfare need we will be advocating for at the festival is the need to be free from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
We will do this through our guest speakers, there will be a talk from a vet and a vet nurse which will be super educational and teach us how we can better advocate for our rabbit's health and give them the best healthcare.
@empire_and_otherness are a small company, who sell bespoke hand painted glasses, with genuine Swarovski crystals, created uniquely for you.
They can hand paint your rabbits on a huge variety of different items which are especially amazing as keepsakes to remember a rabbit who has left us.
We can't wait to see what they have available to purchase on the day!
The fourth welfare need is all about companionship, for rabbits this means that all rabbits must live with a bonded companion (or more) of their own kind. This can be more difficult for some rabbits who struggle to communicate or have a traumatic past. It is so important that as their guardians, we persist and understand it may take multiple attempts to find the right match but it's always worth it in the end.
We will have various rescue stalls at the festival who will all be advocating for this basic need and will be more than happy to discuss adoption and bonding options with you. There might even be an experienced speaker talking about companionship and bonding on the day!
Our next rescue who will be holding a stall at the festival is Tiny Paws MCR! A home-based, vegan-run, small animal rescue and registered charity set up in early 2019. They rescue rodents and rabbits in the Manchester area, and find them forever homes with loving humans.
Tiny Paws focus on the well-being of each individual animal, giving all in their care spacious set-ups, healthy diets, stimulating enrichment, and small animal-savvy vet care when needed. In order to run to high welfare standards, they will only take in a fairly limited number of animals at a time and operate a waiting list system, prioritised based on each animal’s situation.
We look forward to seeing Tiny Paws MCR at the festival and giving them the opportunity to raise awareness and support for their amazing work.
The need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns is the third welfare need for rabbits which we will be advocating for at The National Rabbit Festival.
This means having an enriching environment where they are able to freely run, jump, hide, dig, chew and binky. At the festival you will be spoilt with options for enrichment toys to fulfil this requirement!
A rabbit also has a whole range of social behaviours which require a companion (or more!) to engage in these behaviours with. A human friend isn't the same as a rabbit friend. As much as we can try, we just can't speak rabbit!
What are your rabbits favourite enrichment items and what types of enrichment are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?
150 days to go!
Who else has a countdown to the best rabbit event of the year? (if we do say so ourselves...!)
The need for a suitable diet is our next welfare requirement which is set out by the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
For rabbits, this means a diet of 85% hay or grass, 10% greens and 5% pellets.
Brassicas and fruit are a treat and should be fed very sparingly, keeping the diet as close to what a rabbit has evolved to eat naturally which is safe wild plants! Lots of our vendors will be selling dried forage at the festival which are a great option if you're not comfortable foraging for plants in nature.
Our next vendor announcement is @twig_and_nibble
Twig & Nibble is dedicated to promoting a healthy and natural diet for rabbits and guinea pigs. They sell dried herbs and natural treats, packs of dried flowers and forage basics as well as creating some unique and tempting treat boxes using seasonally dried plants and flowers. It is run solely by Anna after over a decade of rabbit welfare experience.
We can't wait to see the products they have for sale at the festival!
One of the aims of this festival is to advocate for rabbits and their requirements as a species.
The basis for these welfare requirements is the Five Welfare Needs.
The first, is the need for a suitable environment. For rabbits this means having 24/7 access to a space measuring at least 3m x 2m x 1m. Rabbits in the wild cover an area of 30 tennis courts every day so it's easy to imagine how distressing it would be for a rabbit to be stuck in a cage or hutch without space to run and explore.
How do your rabbits show you how much they enjoy space and freedom to exercise? Please tag us in your spacious housing set ups in your stories!
